The Con/LibDem coalition Welfare Reform Bill is up for its first full debate in the House of Commons on Wednesday (9 March). It's certain to be controversial, and I've already had a lot of people and organisations contacting me with their concerns. I hope to be able to speak in the debate, although I suspect there will be a lot of demand from MPs to take part.
I've set out some of my views and concerns in other posts on my blog, here, and on my website, here. My website also contains information about some of the government's proposals (not just those in the Welfare Reform Bill, but other government proposals as well). I would be very interested in any more comments, views or questions, from people living in Edinburgh North & Leith - please post your comments below!

I am grateful that my local MP has raised these concerns and support him in doing so; however, I think Labour perhaps should have taken the opportunity to make more thorough reforms when they were in power but failed to do so. There have been comments in the media stating that reforms from Labour could have been focussed on treating people with dignity rather than detrimentally affected by ill-conceived cuts and right wing distortions. The Labour leadership in power however seemed happy to make similarly distorted comments regarding those in need of benefits etc. We need a renewed Labour Party to represent the labour movement; not a Labour leadership making Daily Mail style comments.
There is certainly a debate that can be had about what Labour did, or didn't do. But the focus surely has to be on what the Con/Dem government are planning now - that is the current debate!
Yes, and the Labour Party are needed more than ever to oppose them. I've joined the Labour Party recently and I hope many other people will see the clear difference between Labour and the Tories now and support Labour.
