Japan's tragedy
It's difficult to find words to express your feelings when you watch the TV pictures of the tsunami wave and its continuing aftermath. Seeing the giant wave inexorably moving towards buildings and vehicles, knowing that people will be about to be swept up in its power, is a horrible sight. Of course, there are other horrors taking place in the world every day - and there will no doubt be renewed concerns about civil nuclear power and a wide range of other issues - but today I just want to put on record my deepest sympathy for the people of Japan and what they have been and are going through.

Con/Dem Welfare Reform Bill up for debate on Wednesday
The Con/LibDem coalition Welfare Reform Bill is up for its first full debate in the House of Commons on Wednesday (9 March). It's certain to be controversial, and I've already had a lot of people and organisations contacting me with their concerns. I hope to be able to speak in the debate, although I suspect there will be a lot of demand from MPs to take part.
I've set out some of my views and concerns in other posts on my blog, here, and on my website, here. My website also contains information about some of the government's proposals (not just those in the Welfare Reform Bill, but other government proposals as well). I would be very interested in any more comments, views or questions, from people living in Edinburgh North & Leith - please post your comments below!
